Ein Glühwein…

My first German words…

I have been to heaven and it is a pretty cool place.

I have a new favorite drink.  Called Glühwein.  Mulled wine with spices.  The first thing I did when I got back to the states was to Google how to make Glühwein.

I follow a particular fashion blog on a daily basis, and occasionally in the winter there are references to absolutely decadent well tailored, and over the top coats worn by particular celebrities affectionately known as coat porn.

Well I saw coat porn…

And experienced shopping porn…

And car porn (Mercedes Benz, of course)…

Cars2Cars1

And food porn at the Viktualienmarkt…

Food2Food3Food1

With Bavarian pretzels at every meal… (and German beer)

We saw lights…

We saw architecture…

We saw spectacular landscapes…

We saw incredible textiles…

And I even found the recommended felt shop…  Talk about porn…  And yes I bought something…

There are yarn bombs even in Germany…

We got on a train…

And went into the Bavarian Alps to see a couple of castles…

Crazy King Ludwig II spent his summers here in Hohenschwangau…

So it made perfect sense to build his castle on the next mountain over…

Neuschwanstein3

Neuschwanstein…

Neuschwanstein2

This is the castle Disney used as inspiration for his Cinderella castle.  It is a tribute to Richard Wagner.  Only 13 rooms were ever finished and Ludwig II only lived in Neuschwanstein for 170 days.  It is only 130 years old.  There are no words…

My wonderful over the top three day getaway to Munich in Bavaria was more than I could have ever dreamed.  I loved every minute of it.  The food, the markets, the people, the architecture, all gave me a profound sense of being home.  I’ve never been to Germany, don’t speak a word of the language, (well now I know two words), but I am completely German, with a maiden name of Ebeling, and a grandfather and father named Ralph (Rolf) and a grandmother named Elfrieda Stein, I couldn’t be anything else.  I know these people, I know these landscapes.  And I hope to one day go back and spend more time.

But for now, I’m grateful to my husband and the ticket he had to use before the end of the year that prompted this little weekend get away, and all his Marriott points and platinum status. Membership has its privileges…

My oldest and dearest friend Candiss Cole has arrived and I’m enjoying her company and writing this blog late at night since everyone else is asleep.  There just aren’t enough hours in the day…

Stay tuned.

I am glad you had a good time in Munich. You have reminded me that it is one of my favourite places. I hope you ate a piece of kasekuchen for me.

Your spur of the moment trip was the best time of year, in my opinion for visiting Munich! And yes the shopping just off Marienplatz is fabulous. Quit a festive place. Congratulations on a whirlwind adventure!

OH yes, porn by any other name 🙂 My son is in northern Germany and where as there aren’t any castles where is is, the fabric, clothing and food are spectacular. SO glad you got to enjoy it ALL!
