WORKSHOPS AND LECTURES 2008-2009
CONVERGENCE 2008 TAMPA June 22-28, 2008
WEAR
WHAT YOU WEAVE
This intense workshop
takes one through fiber and sett choices, structure for clothing, finishing and
color forecasts for those wanting to weave the right fabric for great looking
and great fitting garments. Working with commercial patterns, garment
construction design, fit and details will be discussed. Students of all
skill levels can expect to gain confidence designing flattering handwoven
garments, beyond loom shaped, and to have the courage to cut their fabric and
wear their garments with assurance. Materials Fee
A SEWER'S PERSPECTIVE:
INSTRUCTIONAL TOUR OF THE JURIED FASHION SHOW
An
interactive exploration behind the "seams" of the garments from the
Fashion Show. You saw them on the runway, now
see them up close and inside. Participants will experience a technical critique of
garments on display, seeing the inside finishing techniques as well as the
outside appearance, and fit. This kind of experience provides the
participants with many ideas for finishing, what works and what doesn't. A
terrific "behind the seams" look allowing participants to view first hand,
some of the choices used by experienced fiber artists. A CONVERGENCE
favorite.
DESIGN CHALLENGE PANEL
Three teams of two designers were challenged to create a wearable collaborative ensemble using yarn dyed by Laura Bryant of Prism Studios in the colorway of Convergence 2008, Tampa Bay. Come and listen as each team recounts their unique process and see their results. Participants are encouraged to submit general questions for the panel about the process in advance.

A WEARABLE EXTRAVAGANZA: Wrap
Yourself in Clothing From You Own Hands (5 DAYS)
Wrap your
body in clothing from your own hands. This is a terrific class for those
wanting to learn to fit and sew
clothing from their own handwoven, hand printed,
dyed, quilted, felted or other special fabric, as well as those more experienced
students wanting polished and professional results. You will construct a
basic unlined jacket custom-fit to yourself with pre-washed fabric you bring to
class, while learning all sorts of inspiring techniques to make your garments
reflect your creativity. You can expect to gain confidence in your garment
construction skills, no matter what level, and will learn to work with your
special fabric. Daryl's goal is to have participants look at sewing as a
creative process by itself, instead of a tedious necessity in order to achieve a
wearable garment. Skills are taught using samples, handouts, storyboards,
PowerPoint presentations and demonstrations. Repeat students who have
already made the jacket may opt to make a pieced vest or bring their own
pattern. Materials
